4 September (Lloyd's List) - THE PORT of Gothenburg has completed a new 144,000 sq m terminal after six years of construction.
Arendal 2 is the largest change at the Swedish port in four decades and cost around €60m ($66.3m) to build.
Gothenburg chief executive Göran Eriksson said planning for the new terminal began in the 1990s with a view to future-proof the port’s facilities.
“Now that future is here, and this terminal is needed to meet the transportation needs of Swedish industry today, which are also expected to continue growing over time,” he said.
The terminal has been designed with the relocation of some of Swedish shipping company Stena’s operations from the city centre to the port.
But it is already being used by operator Gothenburg Roro Terminal, the largest of its kind in Scandinavia. The terminal will allow the operator greater access to the hinterland from berths 712 and 713.
The foundations of the terminal were constructed from material dredged from the Göta River, which were solidified and then asphalted over.
“We have hit two birds with one stone here, where we have both managed to clean the river and dispose of dredging material locally without unnecessary transportation,” said Eriksson.
“This has been done in a safe and environmentally friendly manner under a strict control program. The goal of reusing as much material as possible has been very successful in this project.”
