The South African Weather Service (SAWA) published a severe weather alert today, 20 June, in which it informed the public that high waves and strong winds could lead to "difficulty in navigation at sea." Kuehne+Nagel sources confirmed that the severe weather is affecting the country's port productivity.
The Western Cape province in South Africa - home of Cape Town Port - was hit by extreme rainfall over the recent days. According to Crisis24, the region is currently experiencing disruption due to flooding, with the worst hit area being the West Coast District Municipality.
"Winds resulting in difficulty in navigation at sea and disruptions in harbours and ports, expected between Plettenberg Bay and Kei Mouth," warned the SAWA report. In addition, the South African Broadcasting Centre (SABC) cited Cape Town Disaster Risk Management spokesperson Charlotte Powell as saying, "The winds could cause damage to electrical and communication infrastructure."
The latest information conveys that the storm has also affected the southern region. An advisory circulated by Danish carrier Maersk informed customers that severe weather in Cape Town had caused an 8-day delay to one of its vessels at Durban Port.
