According to the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), unfavourable weather conditions caused the 13,000-TEU container vessel CMA CGM Belem to lose containers overboard while sailing off the east coast of South Africa.

The incident, which occurred on 16 August, took place off the coast of Richard Bay and resulted in the loss of 99 containers.

In less than a month, there have been two box spills that have affected the French liner off South Africa.

Last month, 40 containers were lost by the 18,000-TEU CMA CGM Benjamin Franklin also off the east coast of South Africa.

Seaexplorer data show that boxship Belem was en route to Colombo Port and is deployed on CMA CGM's SEAS2 service, connecting Asia with South America.
